João Felipe da Fraga Violin | HMI Fellow

MM Violin Performance.

João first met the violin at age thirteen in his hometown of Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Brazil. Two years later, he moved out of his state to join the NGO Orquestrando a Vida. Shortly thereafter, he was admitted in the Brazilian Youth Symphony Orchestra. In 2019, he completed his bachelor's degree in music under the mentorship of James Alexander at the Nicholls State University, supported by a full ride scholarship.

João has participated in several music festivals, such as Santa Catarina International Music Festival (Brazil) and Academie Musicale de Morges (Switzerland). Some of the musicians he has played for include Paul Kantor, Leon Spierer, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Ole Bohn, Andrés Cárdenas, Katy Sebastien, Ervin Schiffer, Marcello Guerchfeld, Arianna Quartet and the Atrium Quartet.

In the summer of 2019, he joined the faculty of the Domingos Martins International Music Festival in Brazil. João in pursuing his MM in Violin Performance with Charles Castleman at the Frost School of Music and is a fellow at the Henry Mancini Institute, where he had the opportunity to play alongside Arturo Sandoval, José Feliciano, Maria Schneider, Shelly Berg, and Scott Flavin.
